Music project “Rock and Opera”

Picture it: a banquet hall, the guests have already gotten acquainted, someone keeps glancing at the clock, and then musicians walk onto the stage — drums, bass, guitar. And a minute later an operatic aria rings out over the tables, only it sounds as if a rock band wrote it. The room goes silent, phones come out on their own.

“Rock and Opera” is a project whose core is leading soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre. They perform famous operatic arias in rock, blues and jazz arrangements accompanied by rock musicians. Everything is built on original arrangements and original hosting, the sound is only live — no playback.

The project's distinction is that academic vocals here are not a “conservatory number” but a full-fledged part of a rock concert. The soloists maintain the program at club venues, concert halls and drama theatres, perform at open-air festivals and corporate events. Over 12 years, the project has opened the classical music festival “Classics over the Volga” and the Odessa International Film Festival — that is, it can work both with a large stage and with a hall where the audience sits at tables.
