About the artist

A Chinese delegation is on site, and no one in the room understands what its leader is saying. The pause drags on, the presentation stalls, and everything you have prepared for weeks risks turning into polite nods without meaning. At such a moment, it is not the microphone volume that decides, but the person in the booth.

Olga Kozhemyakina is a simultaneous interpreter in the Russian–Chinese pair, also working with English. She has been translating for over 25 years: in 1995 she graduated from N. G. Chernyshevsky Transbaikal State Humanitarian and Pedagogical University with a degree in 'Interpreter and Teacher of Chinese and English', interned at Tianjin Pedagogical University, and in 2003 received a second higher education in economics. In 2019, she passed the CATTI Chinese language interpreter qualification exam and became a finalist in the international interpreting competition Cosines Pi in the 'Simultaneous Interpreting' category.

On site, her work is invisible — and that is the point. Olga works in the booth at major Russian forums, including the International Municipal Forum of BRICS+ countries and the NEVA exhibition, at bilateral negotiations with Chinese delegations, and was part of the simultaneous interpreting team at the Russian-Chinese business forum 'ROSTKI' in Kazan. She is skilled in chuchotage — whispered interpreting without equipment, when there is no booth and the conversation is one-on-one. She conducts her own training on simultaneous and socio-political interpreting for Chinese-language interpreters.
