Simultaneous interpreter Rakhima Shigapova

An Arab delegation at a forum, live speech without pauses, and an audience waiting for simultaneous interpretation in headphones. A mistake here is costly: a negotiation round will fail, and the meaning of what is said will slip away. It is precisely at such moments that people look not just for someone with a dictionary, but for an interpreter who keeps the pace and the context.

Rakhima Shigapova is a practicing simultaneous interpreter of Arabic, working language pair Arabic–Russian. She studied in Cairo since 2007 and has been teaching Arabic for 15 years. She interprets in a professional booth and consecutively: international forums, business meetings, courts of general jurisdiction in Moscow and the Moscow region, KazanForum, the International Youth Forum in Yekaterinburg.

A separate story is the simultaneous interpretation into Arabic of the immersive performance by the Liza Alert search team: there the interpretation goes in step with the action, with no right to pause. Rakhima was a mentor at the Translation Educational Forum of the Association of Translation Teachers and hosts networking meetings for Arabists at the Russian State Library. On site, it looks calm: a booth, headphones, a steady voice that keeps up with the speaker.
